Whaleys

Reflecting on work during unit 5 & 6 I feel as though my strengths lie in printing and textiles. I enjoy using mixed media to create different types of prints which are transferable across fashion and interiors. I have collected samples from whaleys as I plan to investigate printing my own scarfs. I have spoken to textiles tutors and taken in samples to show them in order to get advice. I plan to investigate materials such as silks, muslin and light weight cottons to achieve the best outcome. Personally at this stage I ideally want to print silk as it is a luxurious fabric and I feel its high fashion. However, it will be interesting to see if using materials such as cotton and muslin will change my mind as they equally can be printed onto and are still lightweight like silk. Additionally, thinking about cost cottons / muslin fabric would be much cheaper to print. I want to sample these fabrics and see what outcomes I get. I think it will be really interesting to add a contrast of ignored nature like , mushrooms , lichen and then the surrounding geometric shapes from buildings in blackburn and create something wearable from this, that can either be worn or hung as an interior piece.

I have spoken to our textile technician about ordering some silks for use of silk scarfs they need to be fabrics that are prepared for printing and dying. She then gave me a price list of Whaleys. I have emailed Whaleys enquiring about samples I am then going to ask for advice what is the best to print with. I have ordered 5 samples I am then going to discuss these with technicians and get advice before purchasing.

SILK SAMPLES

I ordered a range of silks as I haven’t had much experience buying silks I wanted to order a range and then get advice on what would be best to use. After looking at the silks, I came to a decision that the Creme de Chene medium weight silk would be best for silk scarfs as it is light weight, soft , translucent and very feminine my textiles technician also agreed it would be perfect for the use of scarfs. I also looked at some light weight cottons and muslins. I particularly like the cotton sateen mantra as it has similar qualities to the silks .
